What a Texsolv heddle is

A Texsolv heddle is two parallel polyester threads, machine-crocheted into one continuous, knot-free length with a rectangular eye in the middle. The warp thread passes through the eye, and the shaft raises and lowers it. Because there are no knots and the polyester does not stretch, the eye stays exactly where it was set, warp after warp, and nothing snags or wears the yarn.

Heddles are supplied in tied bundles of 100, held with four plastic clips. Slip the whole bundle onto the heddle bars, untie, and distribute. A single heddle can be separated from the chain if one needs replacing, and cut ends never need fusing.

How sizes work

A heddle size has two numbers: the first is the length in millimetres, the second the length of the eye in millimetres. So 280/12 is a 280 mm (11") heddle with a 12 mm eye, the most common size on Scandinavian countermarch and counterbalance looms. Table looms and small jack looms use shorter heddles (150 to 237 mm); dobby and computer looms use longer ones (330 to 390 mm).

If you don't know your size, use the heddle size finder, look up your loom in the guide by loom brand, or measure an existing heddle: stretch it gently between two sticks against a tape measure. Don't measure a cut piece.

Colours

Coloured heddles let you colour-code shafts, so a complex threading becomes a pattern you can read from across the room. Standard sizes are stocked in seven colourfast shades:

Special heddles

Closed eye

Standard heddles have an open, easy-to-thread eye. For rugs, heavy yarns or very narrow warps a closed eye keeps the thread centred; see 280/20 closed eye and 330/12 thin-thread closed eye for narrow weaving.

Long eye 300/64 and 330/64

Ground heddles with a 64 mm eye for damask looms and opphämta draw attachments, for Glimåkra, AK Snickeri Öxabäck (300/64) and Toika (330/64). The long eye lets the pattern shafts lift the thread without the ground shafts interfering.

Mirrix

A dedicated heddle for Mirrix tapestry and bead looms, in white and colours, so different sections of a tapestry warp can be told apart at a glance.

Threading

Fold the warp end, push it through the rectangular eye with a finger and pull through. It works equally well right- or left-handed, and a reed hook is rarely needed. Made a threading mistake? A new heddle can be inserted at the correction point without re-threading the shaft.
